Yes, could be too much force, but also make sure your DIY tool is spinning freely on the rivnut. You don't want it to transfer any of it's rotational torque to the rivnut, just it's pulling force. Maybe put a little lube and/or nylon washer on the top of the rivnut.

Well, I tried another hex rivet nut (by hand) and it stripped the hole as well. I just bought the Astro 1442 tool and some steel round Rivnuts. Right tool for the job almost always seems to make me less angry than trying to DIY. I don't know why I try anymore.

Also found a post on the transit forums saying if you take the nose piece off the Astro 1442 and put a washer on it, it will work with prebulbed plusnuts. I might order some plusnuts if these hex and round rivnuts don't work out.

The minimum grip range of your riv-nuts may be too large you need a .020" minimum grip. If the grip is too large it may never grip the metal and you will end up spinning the riv-nuts this applies to Plus nuts also.

The Fastenal sources Sherex hex rivnuts worked for me. The bolt size is M8. A very accurate fit in the hex holes and squeezed down very solidly to the sheet metal.
