We will be putting it in a well-ventilated box beneath the counter behind the driver's seat. How much heat does the body of the unit produce? I am wondering if I need to make an insulated box to keep things in the cabinet directly above it from heating up?

I can’t comment on a gas heater because I don’t have one but the Chinese diesel heaters only get warm at the heat output the rest of the unit is room temperature. I can’t believe there is much, if any, difference in the case temperature.
I have no qualms having a freezer compressor near the rear end of the gas Webasto, and soon the VeLit.
The output hose and vent on ours runs under the kitchen cabinet. No noticeable warmth in the lowest drawer. The heater case itself gets warm to the touch, but not hot.
