I said what it applies to. Downloaded movies with DRM protection.

Streaming isn't downloaded content.
I didn’t say I was streaming. I am downloading content within a streaming provider app and then watch it without an internet connection.
I am asking what DRM protection is and what provider/content uses it. Not the providers I mentioned above, or at least they don’t prevent one from playing downloaded content without internet connection.

Downloaded movies with DRM protection need an internet connection in order to begin watching them. It only takes a second to verify DRM content then it will allow viewing.
I've had it work that if the download page is open, they play. But maybe had some internet. Either way, with starlink I can get it going if I need to.

I picked this up to mount my starlink on the dash.

Here is the power plug with usb c

A good cable

A way to join this cable to the oem starlink cable.

I've been considering that mounting device. The clipboard area is less pebbly than the rest of the dash, So there's a better chance the suction will hold. Has it held for you?

i bought the Starlink 12v power cord and adapter. It was $47, which is a little more than the Amazon versions, but not by that much, and the chance of a knockoff not working as well weren't worth the dollar difference.

I finally got my starlink mount. It's not set up yet. But this is what I'm doing. I'll clip something with a super smooth surface under the clipboard, and fix the suction cups to that. The angle of the dash will help keep it in place. I think this will work. I might even alien tape the smooth board to the dash, for double security.

Hi,
I just received my Starlink Mini yesterday.
So easy to set up!

Will probably go with the 12 to 24 volt converter Ken found so we can position it a ways away if need be.
And the dash dash mount with the single suction cup.

A couple questions for the mini veterans...

- When driving with the mini on the dash, does it make a difference in reception which direction you are driving?
ie - OK going north, but no signal going south?

- How often do you have to position the mini away from the van when in a camp spot to get a usable signal?

- Do you have a stand of some kind for the mini when its off away from the van on the ground?

- usually the first time aiming it to have a view of the sky free of tree limbs works for the entire time we are camped. I guess aiming north is ideal, but aiming other than north is better than aiming north into tree limbs

Do you have a stand of some kind for the mini when its off away from the van on the ground

- we just pivot the arm on the center of the mini out so that it rests on that arm and the bottom edge. We place it somewhere others won’t inadvertently walk

Our experience since May is that direction doesn’t seem to matter when driving with the mini on the dash. Reception is good unless you’re driving through really heavy tree cover.

So far we’ve had to use our external power jack only twice away from the van. Mind you we’ve stayed in 20 or so camp sites and rest stops since buying the mini. Open sky is the key. If you have it the dish will work fine sitting in the dash. You just need to align it. We’re at a spot right now with the dish propped up to perfect alignment. North is behind is but the site isn’t setup to turn around. This looks wonky but we don’t care. 🤪

We didn’t like leaving the dish on the ground so went looking for a stand. But we couldn’t find stands on Amazon that would fit our mini. The descriptions on Amazon all say “for old pipe adapter”. Minis like yours and ours have the “new pipe adapter”. Sigh… So we bought this stand that uses its own 1/4” threaded adapter. Works great so far.

FYI - Stats for where we are even with a tree blocking us to the north.

No problem surfing, streaming videos, etc.

Hi,
Forgot to mention that I bought a "refurb" unit on the Starlink site.

It was fine - I would not have known it was not new. Will see if it holds up, but warranty is the same.

Thanks for the helpful answers.

Gary

In my limited experience, having the mini mounted flat on the roof works fine. It complains of alignment and obstruction issues, but even under relatively heavy tree cover eventually it finds holes and satellites to connect with and the data flows (100-200mbs which seems plenty fast)

The reception range of the mini is 110 degs. Tilting it so it covers the southern sky to the horizon makes sense, but, at least here in Seattle/northern US there are plenty of satellites overhead that pointing south seems like a refinement at best.

I'm writing from my computer using starlink! It works!! So do you hhave to do the set up where you walk in circles with your phone every time you use it?
What is this walking in circles things? Was I supposed to look at the instructions?

Oh. Do you mean that whacky “check for obstructions” thing? We don’t do that at all. The only thing we do is when we stop somewhere for the night we use the alignment thing in the app, try to get the dish tilt right, and rotate the dish slightly until the alignment rectangle lights up bright like this. That’s going to give best performance.

I think she means the check for obstructions thing where you scan the sky with your phone. We haven’t done that at all.

Isn’t it cool? We’ve been to at least half a dozen places with no cell service or WiFi and starlink has been a game changer!

Yes, the obstruction thing. Good to know I don't have to do that, thanks guys! 😁😁😁
And after I boasted about Starlink they had a global outage for a couple hours today. No idea what caused that.

This is why we still download google offline maps when we travel…even with Starlink.

So we still have the dash mount Velcro "system" for our dish during travel.

Here is a "very expensive" camouflage device for when we're parked at a store and don't want strangers noticing the dish...

A thin piece of black felt 98 cents at Walmart. ;)

Image

It just lays on top and makes the dish invisible to curious eyes while we're out and about. Can you see the dish?

Also eliminates that white glare looking thru windshield from inside. (y)
