you mean like this?

Reciept holder being that clipboard thing, right? Does your starlink face the windshield like in this picture?

Or something like this using the adhesive. We have no clue what will work best…😆

The dashboard slants down to the windshield and it’s all that textured plastic so a suction cup probably won’t hold. No metal in there so magnets won’t work. Sheesh.

By the way. We’re camped in a place with absolutely NO cell service at all but Starlink is doing great! And we don’t even have the dish aligned correctly.

Do you have the 50G plan? How are yiu doing with usage? If its on while you drive do you use a lot of mbs?
We know we use a lot of data so we signed up for unlimited. We’re already at 91GB since May 27.

Ok so we're experimenting with Velcro holding the dish down onto the dashboard Not a permanent fix or something I'd recommend for a highway drive but perfect for our drives through the campground here in the White mountains of NH.

Horribly misaligned yes. But performance is excellent.

Yeah... messy...

But maybe there's a way to mount to this map holder thingy compartment? We like the dish on the passenger side.

Got my mini up and running today. Used a 12 to 24 volt converter, used my van automation spare relay to switch power and a cheap magnetic holder to attach the antenna to the roof. With home assistant it was literally less than a minute to make an starlink power switch page. Nothing fancy, just on/off.

It's not optimum, having the mini flat on the roof, but it is sure easy.

Yup 24v seems to be the perfect voltage for these. And the converters are easy to find.

Good to see you retained the hedgehog.
Yeah, I signed up and immediately "paused" the 50g plan, then switched to the $10 plan, which won't take effect until July 12 (a month from now). The plan is to use the "hedgehog" as primary (it draws ~5 w) and boot the StarLink (~20 w) when we get to remote areas. I should have waited to set this up. I don't expect to need StarLink until late August; It kind of stinks that you have to pre-purchase something before changes or pauses can take effect. And those don't happen until the end of the current billing cycle. So, $50 to sign up and another $10 before I can pause... just as I leave for the Arctic Ocean (Tuktoyaktuk or bust!)

Regardless, the set-up and linking the StarLink to the cellular router was pretty straightforward. Nothing special on download speeds (30-50 mbs) but plenty fast for the occasional movie..

We went with the 50g plan and are happy, I've yet to pause it because we seem to end up in places without coverage pretty often. I just try not to think of Elon every month I pay. I find the router to be very powerful, I get a signal a long ways from the van.

@boundary dam w/@baxie. Good Google Fi connection with my cellular router + high gain antenna, but no data! So I fired up the starlink...

This is flat on the roof parked among trees. The obstruction map shows very little except near the horizon. This is awesome.

I wonder how it will do above the Arctic circle on the Dempster highway (Tuktoyaktuk or bust!) this fall.

That’s a perfect site for Starlink. We find it works well unless we have thick tree foliage overhead.

I paused mine immediately before turning it on and I didn't pay anything until I unpause it. I probably lost that 30 day return because I won't be unpausing it until July 20, but that's okay. Have you used it for GPS while driving? I wonder if that uses a lot of G's. (mostly I'd use my cell, whenever possible) I'm sure I'll need all 50G's / month for the 3 months I'm living in the van, then I'll shut it off for the winter.

I don't have a cellular router. My plan is just the hotspot, with starlink giving me internet. That should work, right?

That is essentially what I am doing. My van router will use either the cellular connection or the starlink, in repeater mode, when it is on.

A hot spot is just a wireless router with a cellular connection built in. The starlink has a router built in but no ability to use the cell network.

My set up is a tad complicated to allow me to use my 'free' cellular data (Google Fi, 100G/mo) and switch to starlink when in remote areas Also, the router only consumed ~5 watts vs 20 for the starlink.

Got it. I mostly will use Starlink internet for GPS in areas where there's no cell connection and to download movies. Once they're downloaded and you have the page open to "play", you don't need internet, so then I'll turn off starlink. At least that's what I think I'll be doing. Your setup sounds great though.

Downloaded movies with DRM protection need an internet connection in order to begin watching them. It only takes a second to verify DRM content then it will allow viewing.

I don’t know what that applies to, is that streaming provider dependent?

I always watch downloaded movies on my iPad without any internet connection when camping. I use Netflix, Max, Hulu, Paramount mainly. All work without any internet connection.

I said what it applies to. Downloaded movies with DRM protection.

Streaming isn't downloaded content.
