I am looking to buy a Promaster 2500 high roof with plans for my own conversion. I like this model for a handful of reasons. I'd been reading reviews on this site and others, and I found a handful of what seems to be common problems with the Promaster. If I purchase my used PM from a dealer, I want to ensure any likely issues with the vehicle will be covered under warranty.

Big or small, what are the most prevalent issues with Promasters I should ensure are covered under warranty?

In my research, I've found the following:
  • Coolant leak
  • Transmission issues
  • Headlight bulbs
  • Tire pressure sensor
  • Sliding door handle

Any wisdom here is appreciated.

Many 14 models had weepy radiators. They were easily covered under warranty. (Dealer replaced mine in a half day.)
Squeaky brakes (Mine comes and goes. I don't worry about it as the brakes work terrifically.)
Leaky cowl under windshield. (Mine until I went over the seams with black RTV.)
I don't see these as having endemic issues. (Most of what has come up has been very solvable. IMO anyway.)

Mine did have a oil pressure sensor go bad after a year. Dealer fixed it in a half days work.
Had the oem battery fail under warranty. Dealer put a new one in.

My own only non warranty issue so far was the heater blend door actuator failing. Just past the three year point. New one was $25 and it was an awkward reach, but my son replaced it in 30 minutes.

Mine was a late production first year model. Built Spring of 14. So I expected a few issues. They've been minor so far.

That issue is the beginning of many other problems. Reinforce the ground cable to the chasis. Doing that, you will prevent premature burned light bulbs and also engine starting issues

Maintaining a fleet of promasters I’ve seen all the problems you can imagine. Most common I come across with ours being deliver vans is cooling fans, cv axles door catch. All door latches. Headlights. Mis fires.

I’ve had common ones and odd ball ones. Replaced a couple cylinder heads due to not enough compression in the cylinder. Oil filter housing cracked on a couple. Roller bearings on the rocker arms locked up grinding on the cam shaft. Regen issues on the eco diesels. Replaced some wheel bearings and transmissions. So on and so forth. These days if it’s happened on a promaster I most likely have seen it.

Don’t let this scare you our fleet vehicles are abused and most of the major repairs have happened after 60k which is about 120k in an average vehicle. Our drivers are rough on them. And the areas we deliver are even rougher.

Hello I bought from a friend that passed away a 2014 ram promaster 2500 3.0 L4 diesel. We fixed a bunch of things but we are having a problem with DEF light coming on causing the van to stay in limp mode. We cleaned and backed the SCR filter. Any other ideas?? Would appreciate any help.
Regards,
Mike L.

Can you tell me more about the Cam issue? I have a 2016 2500 and within the last year have spent over 16K replacing the cam position sensors....twice! And now, the truck is doing the same thing. I was able to use my device to clear the lights and it ran fine for a bit (month) and now I had to clear the light over and over again to get home. I am freaking mad!! I've also had headlight issues but that's nothing. This is affecting my ability to work which is costing me much more than repair costs in the end and my customers have to be delayed costing them money!! This truck is going to do me in if someone doesn't figure this out. Can't believe 2 sets of sensors go bad that quickly!! Posting for my husband that is limping his way home AGAIN right now.

OP,

I went the same route as you and got a 2017 2500 from a dealer with roughly 20k on it. It came with a 7 year/100k warranty that seems to be better than the original warranty. So far I had to replace a light bulb (replaced both cause why not) that was at 30k. Doesn't seem weird to me. Didn't even know that was a thing.

Other than that I have not had any issues, knock on wood.

Go get a van!!!!

maybe some had radiator leaks but this disappearing coolant is not just a promaster thing. my dads caravan with the 3.6 does it and my buddies jeep with the 3.6 does it. the reason we all notice it is cause as soon as you pop the hood BAM the coolant bottle about smacks you in the face. my dads '16 caravan you really have to look down in the engine to see it and sure enough his is on the low mark to I think it just dissipates over time and I notice the closer it is to the low mark the slower it seems to disappear.

On my '16 I have had some slider latch issue but for me just keeping the internals of the latch lubed has worked for me. I also made a very slight adjustment to the latch also.

I replace bulbs quite frequently and it seems they go out at startup if they are left on all the time. I think that is when they get the surge that blows them. im not disciplined enough to make sure I turn them of every time so ill forever replace bulbs every few months I guess.

im right at 60,000 and knock on wood my tranny has been good. im kicking around getting the fluid changed like im supposed to.

currently I have an ABS and Hill holder light on and cant find a garage with a scanner so I have been putting thagt off since is still passes inspection and I had ABS more than life itself anyway.

I replaced one front brake caliper and pads and rotors on the front

and lastly the parking brake rod under the van rusted to the point it would not pivot anymore. this was a combo of very salty winter highways in PA and not using it all winter.

that's bout it for me.

I own a 2018 3500 extended hi roof protester. Over all I really like the vehicle. Versatile, great power and handling, a very comfortable with the drivers air shock seat. That being said.
After 2days the tire sensor stayed illuminated even after pressure was checked and even over pressuring the tire. Dealer ship told me it was do to temperature changes and left me to deal with it. 43,000 miles and it's still on.
About a month ago that the sliding side door wasn't locking. I can only assume that it never locked, because being that I noticed it after 36,000 miles again I was left to deal with this issue alone. After removing the door cover panel I quickly found the problem. The two wires going to the door sensor were not attached, as in they had the brass sensor plates attached to them but they were not in the door sensor housing. I put them into their slots on the plastic housing but I still have to manually lock the door. Which is done with a small rod inserted through a tiny slot on the jamb of the door. Like performing arthroscopic surgery. To unlock it isnt as hard. You unlock the back door, my promaster has a cab partition, climb in and just push the door lever forward then back. Just that simple.
On 9/30/19 with 43,000 miles the ESC and engine lights come on and the engine loses power and acceleration. I'm taking it to the dealership so they can tell me that I'm going to have to deal with this problem alone as well. Because sensors aren't covered under their warranty. So 43,000 miles, 2 years, 3 sensors, and 0 help from Chrysler. Funny. They always leave this type of useful and common info out of any sales pitches they spew at you. I would rather know average out of pocket maintenance and repair cost not under their "warranty" than how fast it can accelerate

the cause why my sliding door will not lock by keyfob or front control buttons. The floating contact terminals on the aft part of the door fell inside ?.
Had to disconnect the door from its aft hinge to swing it outward and have room to fish out the fallen terminals, 3 springs and terminal cover.
found all the pieces inside bottom of the sliding door. 3 springs and cover retainer. I bet the switch open itself from the jarring closing of the door. 1 hr of fishing with magnet, inspection mirror. Finally got all the pieces

Complete assembly. Have to make sure that the wires are correctly positioned as in the picture, purple-black in second slot. Or your key fob will be working in reverse.

Heres how much those contact terminals of the sliding door side should stick out when spring loaded The rectangular plastic right below the lower contact is the plunger for door-closed-sense button of the body side.

Little dab of JBWeld on the clips and duck tape, this should hold and stay intact from all the door slammings ?

Heres the substitute for those super expensive($5.50? “each”) OEM Ram/Fiat panel retainers. From Autozone, $2.50 for a package of 6. Picture above, replacement on the right. Head a little smaller, shank the same diameter, and the grabbing power of the shank barbs are super tight!

Mine is 5 years old now. Just took it for state inspection this morning. Passed, no issues. Only 33k miles. Still uses no oil between changes. No evidence of weeps or leaks anywhere. It did use up an inch of coolant from the overflow tank in the past year. No idea why. No weeps anywhere that I can find. No coolant smell anywhere. Except for the side mirror turn signal bulbs, it still is using all its original lights. Side mirrors both got their lights and harnesses changed under a service bulletin over a year ago.

The ProMaster Dodge 2500 2016 has multiple problems the dealer keeps pushing you away and hoping that you can't bring the truck back as much until the extended warranty is in place and then they try to hit you up with deductible when the problem was there before coolant leak oil leak crank problems camshaft problems headlight problems door hinge problems headlight problems , please feel free to contact my email dmartin 726 @gmail.com , this problem has started at 12,000 miles and now I have 75000 MI between Freehold Dodge and Lakewood Dodge in New Jersey neither of them are worth the gas getting there

You did remove and drain the DEF tank right? It has a sensor for DEF quality that has been known to fail and as far as I know the solution is to replace the tank. Not a good option but perhaps a salvage one would be worth a try. DEF will degrade in months if allowed to sit in heat, and has a life of two years MAX. Did it sit long? My dealer reported that some vans on delivery that had sat in MX for months waiting for shipping would show a bad DEF code. They found that filling with fresh DEF would get the code gone.

Mine also has had a coolant leak sense 45000 miles and it leaks rain water under the scowling on Top of the motor. I tell the local ram dealer about all of this and theu look at me like they have never heard of this.

Interestingly, I bought the PM in a big part due to how happy I was with my Dodge minivan with the same Pentastar engine/drivetrain. Of course with the rocker arm bearing problem, my happiness is slightly diminished. But I'm otherwise so happy with my minivan that I made the decision to pay the repair costs and keep it in the family (my daughter is now the primary driver of it).

I'm hoping that my more mature PM's Pentastar won't have this problem. I went into my minivan situation knowing that 2011 was the 1st gen (1st year in fact) of the Pentastar (I bought it used and it was too cheap to resist). Am hoping they have ironed out the issue...7 years later...in my 2018.

If you buy into a different brand, you could buy into their problems. No brand is immune. I'm a huge Honda fan and have had a number of their vehicles. But I understand a lot of Odessey owners are having issues with their transmissions, quite an expensive thing to repair.

You are right on other vehicle problems. I guess I am most disappointed in the dodge dealers. One told me the engine was bad. Another told me they didn't work on the promaster vans. One wanted to sell me a newer one saying it was the 2014 with the most problems. I took it to a independent shop. They told me they just hired the dodge dealer mechanic who was their best promaster mechanic. Needed the van so I had them fix it.
