I have a 2014 ProMaster eco diesel that I was driving down the interstate at about 65mph. I had already put down 1000+ mi with no issues when all of a sudden the load kinda clicking noise started and and smoke started coming out of the hood. I pulled over and opened the hood to see what looked and smelled like exhaust, and noticed the clicking sound was my engine popping pushing out exhaust. I shut the engine down and investigated more. I notice a pice that looked like it was in plugged in the area where the leak was coming from. The picture is if that price. Does anybody know what could be wrong at what the price in the picture is and if it has anything to do with it. I am currently stuck in the middle of nowhere Iowa so any help would be appreciated.

Wires hitched to it? A sensor perhaps but I don’t know from what. Is there an obvious place it should go into? I’d guess oil level sensor.
Is it actually exhaust escaping or crankcase blow?

My best guess, but I knew little about the 3.0l.

I think you can narrow it down to an exhaust temp or pressure sensor(not sure which it is), but the nut/bushing is missing from your picture, it must still be installed, that means to me the sensor blew out. The good part is with the wiring harness intact there is only a small area to search for the hole, I'm guessing the exhaust piping in the area.

Here's a replacement exhaust temp sensor for the PM, I wonder it the sensor blew out of it's fixture.
