Everyone seems to recommend using 1/2" pex for plumbing systems. Does 1/2" refer to inside diameter or outside diameter? same question for all the fittings etc.

Just keep in mind whatever you choose that a slow leak that goes undetected can end up requiring replacing the whole floor and removing a lot of stuff to get to the floor.
