A few years ago we were travelling thru bumfuct Kansas on I-70 during a myriad of tornadoes forming. We high tailed it to a grain silo farm just off the interstate. Parked for the night and watched and witnessed the wind ravaging the roofs around the farm for hours.

Had to wait until they cleared all kinds of vehicles, farm implements, cars and trucks totally destroyed from the grain elevator access.

Not our idea of fun.

When the storm spotters start fleeing, it's time to flee. A few years ago, the PM held its own at 85mph in 85mph crosswind. A few dings from flying debris.

Normally you want to be in a strong basement or storm shelter.

A very strong hurricane will have winds in the 150 mph range. A tornado can easily hit 2x that.

Those wind speeds can drive a piece of straw into tree or a 2x4 through a van easily and they carry with them a lot of debris.

They can take apart all but the very strongest structures in seconds.

I have fled a car and laid in a ditch before in IL. Pretty exciting time.

And don't think you are safe parking under an overpass. They funnel the wind and people die.

I think the main danger is that it will roll the van with you in it tossed around like a load of laundry.

Also, hunkering down in a low spot decreases the risk of getting hit by flying debris, or becoming flying debris yourself. Naturally, if a tornado passes right over you all bets are off.
