I have seen many discussions concerning carrying motor cycles and bicycles inside camper vans. I have also seen mention of racks hanging off of trailer hitches.
A possible solution for some folks might be the use of a single or double Swivel Wheel --See:

These units attach to the van in such a way as to eliminate the twisting force on the trailer hitch. Also they eliminate the hassle of backing up a trailer due to the rigid attachment to the vehicle and the swiveling action of the caster wheel. I have seen both single and double Swivel Wheels in use and the owners I have talked to think the system is super.
