Swivel driver’s seat sensor malfunction

4952 Views 15 Replies 8 Participants Last post by  Winnebago Roam
I have a Winnebago Trend on the Ram Promaster, and am having a problem with the driver’s seat locking and activating the “seat unlocked” alarm even when the seat is locked. If I wiggle around a bit, I can get the alarm to stop, but it just goes off again later. The biggest problem is not being able to shift into gear when this happens. To be clear, the seat is fully locked, but there appears to be a sensor saying otherwise. Anyone ever had this problem, and if so, how do I fix it? Thanks in advance.

I had this problem twice on my driver's seat, nearly stranding me. My solution was to disable the switch that sense when the seat is swiveled. I'm going from memory here, but if you look under the seat there is a white plastic "switch" that when open (swiveled) looks like a "Y" or a "V". When closed (seat in forward position) it is compressed. I think you can pry it out of it's base to modify it. I used a zip tie or two to clamp it in the closed position. The seat can be swiveled without causing the warning. The car can be started with the seat swiveled, which is handy as well. I did the same for the passenger seat. I also installed seat belt receiver extenders which disables the seatbelt warning chime. Not so I could drive without the belt on, but to quell the annoying chime when first starting and it also allows my wife to run to the back without creating a warning chime. None of these mods were intended to defeat safety measures. I am not liable for anything you do in your van.

I don’t have swivels, but I am assuming these are “factory” swivels?

@ShaunB I am assuming you set the white plastic switch to always be on “always a closed circuit”.

Can you post the seatbelt extenders you purchased & where? I have seen some on Amazon.ca, but I find it best to get a recommendation from a Forum Member (& Canadian Purchaser to boot if possible).

TIA

Correct, always on.

Re the seat belt extenders....Here you go. I have been using them for about 6 months. Once you get used to the extra length you forget they are there. I added two layers of black heat shrink wrap that I had laying around and it almost looks OEM

Thank You, I just ordered a couple from the link you posted. 👍
Update !!

These work on my PM & my Jeep perfectly.

Thanks again @ShaunB !!

These look great. Here's an Amazon US version that looks similar, i.e. - without the floppy bits.

Picking this thread back up. We are building our van out and haven’t driven it much with two people. We took it out today for a test drive and the seat unlock alarm almost stranded us at an intersection because it wouldn’t shift out of Park.

Our van has factory swivels and is a 2021 2500 with 159 WB. We bought it brand new in December 2020. There was Service Passenger Seat maintenance alarm when we purchased it, but we were assured by the dealership it could be easily fixed with an assembly replacement. Plus, we had driven 6 hours to get it (Promasters are hard to come by).

In any case, our local dealership (not the one we purchased the van from) claimed they ordered the seat assembly back in January but we haven’t received a notification it arrived yet. I’m going into the dealer tomorrow to try to expedite the issue. Maybe they could mute the alarm at a minimum and allow us to drive the van when it’s going off.

Curious if the OP ended up finding a solution. For others looking to buy a PM, be aware that the factory swivels seem to be a bit troublesome. I’ll provide an update if we’re able to fix it!

In post #2 above @ShaunB writes about the “micro switch” which I am assuming closes the circuit when the seats are forward (allowing the van to be shifted out of park).

I have a 2021 EXT on order with “Factory Swivels”. This was the one item that gave me reservations about factory swivels. I am assuming Ram has to have these mirco switches in their design for liability purposes.
I believe @ShaunB zap strapped this switch & thus circuit “closed”.

Please let us know what you find out & your fix.
Hi @SteveSS

Have you had any issues at all like this with your factory swivels? Can you chime in?
I spent some time examining my switch and comparing it to the drivers side seat which is not triggering an alarm. I could not see any physical difference in how they were working and therefore believe there isn’t a mechanical issue with mine. I wish it were an easy mechanical fix.

Will keep the thread posted...

No issues with our factory swivels yet. Although I'm glad to know how to override the switch now.
Hi all, I went into the dealership today and they swapped out the entire seat track assembly for a new one. Fortunately I got it back same day and now the light is clear! No alarms, no issues. Looks like it truly was just a defective piece.

I did notice upon receipt of the vehicle that there is a hole next to the passenger's seat. I can't recall if it was there before when we purchased the vehicle. The dealership claims they never touched that area. Anyone else have this on their van?

Okay thanks!! Wanted to make sure our dealership didn't accidentally drill something while doing the repair.

Do you live in California?
