We can confirm these results.

Last summer we cut a series of small cardboard squares and were shocked to discover that covering a very small percentage of one panel (not more than 5%) caused the complete shut-down of that panel. Gave us an entirely new perspective on 'The Optimum Campsite'.

Not surprisingly, our three panels are wired in parallel.

My understanding is this behavior is inherent to most solar panels although it can be mitigated somewhat with bypass diodes.

Sunpower has designs with better shade performance and efficiencies at a premium price. See this interesting, if somewhat biased, blog post.
