There have been a few times I've wanted to get onto the roof of the van but haven't since I don't want to damage it...has anybody done it?

I'm a contractor and it would be convenient to jump up there from time to time to arrange materials on the rack.

You will dent it. Folks who have knelt on it dented it too. Put down a piece of sheet goods and you should be fine.
