Have a 2014 2500 Promaster. Need to replace the o2 sensor bank one. Anybody know where this is located?

I'm getting the same 420 code with my PM. The service history looks like it had the heads redone at around 90-something thousand miles - it's now at 108k. Based on the comments here, I'm wondering if that caused it to throw the code. The shady dealer that I bought it from probably cleared the code, so I didn't see it until I drove it around for a while.

There were several open recalls with the PM that I had the dealer close out, and while I was at it, I asked him to replace the O2 sensor while they were in there. I can't remember exactly what they said, but I think he said they ought to replace either the whole exhaust or just the cat and the two sensors in the 1st bank. He did mention that the cat might be shot as others have noted that if it was running rich, it'll destroy the cats. In either case, they quoted me something like $800-900 for the repair and almost fell over.

I did end up getting it to pass emissions inspection as-is by clearing the codes with my scanner, running some Techron through the tank driven about 100 miles. It gave me some unhappy message in the report but ultimately passed. I still have another year until I have to take it again, but I'm wondering if there's any harm in driving it as-is? Is there any chance it'll eventually go on and destroy the second cat?

Thanks for the info^^ @NWOhioGuy what ended up being the issue?
What are some of the other causes then? I have code P0420 and P0430. The shop I take it to tested the catalytic convertor and said there were no issues there. So before I change out the O2 sensors, what else should I be looking for? I have close to 400k miles on my van, and that's the only issue currently.
how do you test a cat converter?

Well, if the cat changes its religion that pretty much speaks for itself, doesn't it?

I bought the torque pro app and use that to keep an eye on my Cats, specifically with 6 output graphs:
  • Catalytic Temp Bank 1 Sensor 1
  • Catalytic Temp Bank 2 Sensor 1
  • O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 1
  • O2 Sensor Bank 1 Sensor 2
  • O2 Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 1
  • O2 Sensor Bank 2 Sensor 2
My (admittedly very rudimentary) understanding is that the temp graphs should be the same and under a certain temp.

The Sensor 1 O2 sensor graphs should look roughly like a sine wave when operating at idle and warmed up. The Sensor 2 graphs should be a flat line. The close the Bank 2 sensor looks to Bank 1, the worse your Cat is performing. Put differently, both sensor 1s should look the same and both sensor 2s should look the same.

But again, this was all explained to me by a mechanic friend so I might be misunderstanding. Take it with a grain of salt.

Hey, all. Found this thread and hoping for some input. I have a P0420 bank 1 (rear cat). Was told by someone who checked the codes the cat is bad. I havent had the sensors checked yet, so i guess its possible its the sensors and I should have someone (can i?) look into that first. Van has 203k miles and original cats so i wouldnt really be that suprised if they are going bad. Cslled local repair shop, quoted $300 for their time but $3300 for the cat since I was told I can only get it (new) from the dealer and rhe dealer only sells it with the mifold attached. Questions: 1. Anyone had to swap out a bank 1 cat? Was it able to be done wirhout replacing the manifold as well? 2. Anyone think my scenario could be sensors? 3. Anyone have success with 3rd party parts or buying a cat online? I dont expect this to be cheap but 4 grand for a single cat is a big oof. My prices are probably a bit inflated due to being in a very expensive area. Fyi.

That's consistent with what I was quoted and I was also told the part would have to be sourced from the dealer. I did find a 3rd party one for under $2k that's an exact match for the van and CARB compliant (which you need for certain states). I've postponed the replacement for now but I'll be asking about that when I pull the trigger. If you go the 3rd party route, let me know how it goes for you.

@promaster I just find it odd that we need to replace the maniold as well, especially since so many do not come with the manifold.
Also I saw this part (sold out currently). It says its california compliant. MagnaFlow California Grade CARB Compliant Manifold Catalytic Converter

Were you told the manifold must come out as well?

Not sure about the manifold but it sounds like we were quoted the same-ish price and told the same story.
