Well I knew about this issue before I bought my PM. Just started at 500 miles in mild, rainy weather.
Hopefully Dodge will acknowledge it and do something about it but I won't hold my breath. In 20k miles or so after I've pissed off a lot of pedestrians I'll get new pads >
I don't expect Dodge to do anything because it happens on Ducato's too. My dealer said, its to be expected with metallic brakes at times.
Maybe it's part of the pros and cons of great (powerful) brake pads. They sure beat the stopping power of any pickup truck pads I've ever had.
I've noticed mine squeak more when cold. A few hard stops and they stop squeaking. I found a guy on youtube claiming blowing off the brake dust with compressed air can help. Haven't tried that yet.
I believe the dust thing, when I power wash the wheels it is quiet for some time. I used permatex disc brake quiet on the fronts. When it is cold they squeal a bit until warmed up.
My 2500 159 has been squealing since 150 miles. Chrysler just keeps saying that their engineers are working on it. Has anyone tried other brake pads? Never have I had a vehicle that creates this much brake dust or makes this much noise. I would gladly trade brake life for less noise.
Well it's been about 6k miles since I did it and although at times there is a quick low grade squeal it's certainly not bad enough to make me want to take the time to do it again. I really think the only sure cure will be to use softer pads than the OEM ones.
Yes it goes between the back of the pads and the caliper piston. There are no shims on the pads which, I'm sure, helps contribute to the squeak. Not a perfect fix but well worth the $10 it costs!
My Sprinter's brakes never squeaked but that's about the only good thing I can say about it
Mine started squeaking at 150 miles, so if its brake dust causing this I should only have to wash or hit them with compressed air about 2 or 3 times a week to solve the problem. Fix it again Tony!
I was under the impression that the squealing wasn't caused by brake dust, it was caused by slightly loose pads. I haven't even complained about squealing to the dealer because I had read (here) that when it comes time to do a brake job using some anti-squeal paste on new pads should solve the problem. Your thoughts?
"Regarding the noisy brake concerns on your ProMaster vehicle. Here is the most recent update received from Chrysler Engineering addressing the brake issue: The new materials for the Rear Brake pads have been tested and results show significant improvement. The Rear Pad kits have not been released yet. The Front brake pad materials are still being tested and are not yet scheduled for release. Thank you again for your patience in these matters. I will update you again as soon as I have any new information from engineering. Have a great day....The engineering group is actively working on a resolution for the ProMaster. They are aware of the tire pressure monitor issue. Presently the engineering group is working on a resolution. It is recommended the customer wait until new resolution is released that will provide a permanent resolution. The noise does not pose a safety issue. Thank you again for your patience in these matters. I will update you again as soon as I have any new information from engineering. Have a great day..."
On the resolution above from Chrysler Engineering, I am sure it will equate to us paying to have them re-install the improved pads, labor/equip. It won't be a freebie from the dealer. It SHOULD BE, but won't.
In my opinion the front have a slight design flaw. The outside caliper has a small footprint
on the out side pad.
Since the small contact area is so small and does not spread the load, the liner just does not
last. Even CRC disc brake quiet will not last but I am giving it another shot.
I am sure this is why they are taking so long as to solve the problem.
Look at picture below.
After reading through this forum I am happy to hear that I am not the only person with this brake problem. It is so loud! SO embarrassing! Dealer made me feel like I’m the only one and I’m crazy. They said they can’t fix it but will call me back. Been in there twice now. I’ve tried to fix myself but now I’m lost. So what is the source? The forum confused me more. At first I thought it was the contact between the calipers and back of the pad. Some say that. Some say it’s the surface of the pad to the rotor (I tend to think that’s it). I sprayed the back of pads with sticky stuff and thought I fixed it. Didn’t work long, and figured my temporary fix came from just taking everything off and cleaning it. I’ve noticed if I slightly press the brake pedal for about ¼ mile while driving…it stops with no noise….every time. So that’s why I think it’s the pad surface. Maybe heating it up gives a temporary fix. Anybody know for sure how to fix this?
Yup! They replaced my parking brake pads and disks trying to fix it but didn't replace the cables which was what I thought the problem was in the first place. Here my thread dealing with it.
Great Powerful brakes with advertised Long Extended life pads, I'll take em. Ford has had some vehicles in the past needing brake pads every 25-30k miles. Nothing more annoying than needing brake pads replaced so quickly, especially for city stop n go drivers. The squeal is pre set in there from the brake pad manufacture, a way to get us annoyed because they are upset they will not be selling pads as frequently as they would like , haha!
Got good news from my dealer this morning on the phone. My PM is ready to go but not completely serviced (head rest parts still missing). Wasn't really surprised, but I wish they learned to check for part availability before giving appointments.
But he told me a good news, he said that he has a service bulletin from Chrysler about the brake squeal problem, seams that they are working on it. He will print it for me, I'll post it later.
The calipers on my 2013 Ducato are Bosh branded. I think only the bigger Ducato Maxi (3500 and 4000 kg) has the same Brembo calipers of the Ram Promaster.
I had the squealing too, but for a short period. I used the Wurth product, but the dealer said me that the noise will resolve by itself as well of the rear suspension bushing noise.
Now I have 60000 km on it and there are no noises at all.
Case number: S1405000010 Vehicle Issue: Brake squeal while applying brakes
Discussion:
Do NOT replace brake pads for brake squeal concerns. First eliminate all other possible causes and contributing factors for brake noise by following the detailed service procedures available in (web link info given here). If the brake squeal concern is determined to be caused by the brake pads, do not perform any repairs.
Contact STAR and open a Technical Assistance Ticket for the complain.
Example: your narrative should read:
Brake squeal caused by brake pads - Please notify us when the update is available. "The ticket will be opened and closed". You will be notified when an update is available. The repair solution for this concern is currently under engineering investigation.
I like the fact that they wrote "You will be notified when an update is available". They could have written: "You will be notified if an update becomes available".
So, there is hope that we may live in a quiet world, some day.
Here's what a guy from UK replied on my World Wide Web Investigation on the brake squeal:
"Mine did it from new, i believe it's the compound used, but I lived with it, they lasted 160,000 miles, then put Lucas trw pads in, brill no squeak but they lasted 40,000 miles"
Your speculated that newer pads (softer) would last half the millage of the current ones. It is actually one quarter of the millage, according to the UK guy.
My solution for quiet and long lasting brakes: re-introduce Asbestos for the pads >
