So here's my air filter with 210,000 miles on it. The pics make it look bad, but it's actually pretty clean. I replaced it because I had already bought the the replacement, but it was basically fine and probably would have gone another 200k no sweat. Contrary to what you may know from carburetor days, a dirty air filter won't affect your mileage or drivability, though it may affect max power slightly. Conclusion: these gigantic air filters will probably last the life of the engine for most people.
