Sugar Pine Point State Park is just about 5 miles south and you should be able to get a reservation at this time of year. William Kent is just north and right across from Sunnyside Resort. For some non campground spots in the woods head out Blackwood Canyon towards Barker Pass. Camp along the road near the Creek or head up the mountain and park at the end of the road.
Bears will be around so keep your food inside unless you are near it.

If your really cheep like me you would stop at Donner Summit Rest Area , then over to the lake on highway 89 . Get to the lake by sunrise . Get rejuvenated , then proceed .
The Gold Run Rest Area is closed 'till later in the month . I've been using these rest areas for years , just park a bit away from the restrooms for "quiet" . Gets a bit cold at Donner Summit though .
Camp Richardson is nice in South Lake Tahoe .
Thank you dttocs for the heads up .

Thanks for the suggestion, Barker Pass has some great spots to boondock! I had a great night up there last night.

Mostly sprinters at the expo, but lots of people who are doing things for Promaster too...

Is all the demand for vans really that far in MBs favor? Thats like 98% of vans you see. I get they have a luxury name, but they are not reliable, cost a ton to fix and are just so slim. Was at the Hershey show last week and you really can feel that width difference when you step in a MB van and a Promaster van. To the point where I dont think I could make a MB work for me. Mostly because of how much they curve at the top.

Im really surprised we see pretty much no vans yet using the Ecoboost Transit. I thought that would be a hit. I think I saw one build on Youtube that mentioned some oddities of building on the Transit platform.

People are basically very lazy, otherwise they would do exactly what most of us have done and compare the Sprinter with the Promaster.

I think a lot of these "converters" use a Sprinter chassis because they believe (rightfully so) their typical customer thinks Mercedes is the Cadillac of vans and they can coax even more money out of they for the perceived extra value. We all know better, as does most of Europe! ;)

Got home around 4pm today from the Tahoe trip , THANK YOU dttocs ! Made a great weekend out of the Expo . Van porn . Mainly full of Sprinters and associated vendors . Glampervan had 2 Promasters there .Very nice . And some real jewelry ,and showboats .
I went get ideas and did I ever ! What a community , everyone was happy to chat about their wares/vans . Even the parking lot had interesting rigs . I left the slider of mine open and when I turned around there were people going in ! I then put the step stool at the door to make entry easier . I'm glad I picked up a bit .
Go to the Adventure Van Expo website and check out the vendors , they might even know about another show .
And the next day at the campground a few folks were checking out "stumpy". My neighbor liked how basic my rig is . Or maybe he liked how I pulled in , plugged in , deployed the recliner chair and cracked a coldie in about 16 minutes .
Thanks again dttocs , nice to meet you !

On the way to a swap meet (cargo duty PM ) I stopped at the San Joaquin River Wildlife Refuge to kill a little time . A pair of bird watching ladies asked me all about the PM . They were quite interested so I had to open it up . It was half full of junk but the folding twin was up and they could get the idea . They later let on they had a 1990 Westfalia . Time to trade up ladies , move out of the sticks .

I’m always suspicious of an event that wants to charge people to sell them something - that’s why I refuse to ever visit any of these types of shows.
I notice it’s pretty difficult to even find out how much they charge up front without reading a bunch of overpriced and unnecessary options. If someone is ashamed of what they charge they always make it difficult for the buyer to find out the real cost and that alone is reason to avoid them.
