I got a Hitch Extender with Step from Harbor freight. Does a good enough job and doesn't set off the proximity alarm when in reverse.

Rich,

Do you find this wide enough? Or would you prefer that it be wider.

I see there's a hole on one side of it. I'm wondering if it would be feasible to extend the width by bolting something on top of it. I still have extra extrusion leftover from my running boards that I was thinking of enginerding something out of.

But at $21 with a 20% coupon, this seems like a better deal.

Here's a link, for people who don't like to Google.

That's exactly the one I have. Plenty wide for my size 10 feet. I often use it as a stool too. I may have to make a pad for it and put some industrial Velcro on it to retain it. I caught mine on sale and used a coupon. It was about $15. No reason you couldn't bolt an extrusion atop it, but that may boost its height up close to cargo bed level. As it is, it is a few inches below the cargo floor level and makes it easier for my smashed legs to step up into the rear when I need to.
