Pre order

I called my local dealer about pre ordering the PM Diesel 159 WB 250 long 2500 and they are going to have their order specialist call me back today.
I will post back my response.

Went by one of my local dealers tonight to finally drive a PM. Was pretty impressed with the ride and drive, and the gas engine does seem to have pretty solid power. I'm likely holding out for the diesel, though, to drive both and see how it compares in pulling torque.

The fleet guy ran a quote for me to see what options are available, and cost, and the 3.0L wasn't available for order. So no sign yet of availability. He said that if it gets further into the summer at some point Chrysler will stop ordering 2014s and there will be a gap before 2015s start up for ordering. So if the diesel ordering doesn't happen soon, it may not make the 2014 model ordering cycle. Other dealers may be different, or have earlier access - has anyone else tried to spec a diesel van in their dealer's ordering system?

I tried to spec a diesel the other day but they could not do so. With that said, they do have two diesels coming to them by august as test beds.
I am also holding out for a diesel and will test drive for comparison. My previous Sprinter diesel was a dream to drive.

If you plan on trading in less than 6 years it's better to not to buy end of model year anyway. Depreciation is primarily driven by model year - not when you bought it, or even miles. A 2014 is probably going to be worth at least $4K less than a 2015 when you sell it. No point in taking delivery of a 2014 in August or September unless you are getting a huge discount.

The diesel power-train is interesting to me for a few reasons:
- fuel economy
- torque for towing
- "robotic" manual transmission vs the minivan transmission in the Pentastar (I registered at the Fiat website and d/l the manual, pretty interesting)
- add-on ecu tuning modules which increase hp/torque 10-15% and improve fuel economy (search for 3.0l Ducato, these are available in UK now)

concerns:
- complexity of the newer-spec emissions diesel with DEF/EGR/DPF
- the transmission might make it far less prevalent than the V6 model (will it scare off buyers?), thus dealers might not be as versed in the diesel and transmission because of slim sales. Purely speculation on my part.

Time will tell.

If Ram wants to sell diesel vans, they are not off to a good start. Fiat said over 2 years ago they had the technology to put diesels on the road in the USA. I would assume some of the diesel customers got tired of waiting and bought the gas. Winnebago has a class b van and a b+ motorhome on the Promaster chassis, I wonder if they'll forget about the diesel?
