Taking the fight to the new Ford Transit and the Mercedes-Benz Sprinter, Ram just unveiled the new 2014 ProMaster which is based on the European-sold Fiat Ducato.
Ram says that the Ducato-based ProMaster offers best in class fuel efficiency, along with best in class cargo capacity.
Under the hood of the ProMaster 1500 is Chrysler’s widely used 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 rated at 280 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. That engine is linked to a six-speed automatic transmission, and offers a gross combined weight rating (GCWR) of 11,500 pounds.
If the V6 is not enough for your hauling needs, the ProMaster can also be had with a 3.0-liter diesel inline four-cylinder producing 174 hp and 295 lb-ft of torque, giving it a GCWR of 12,500 pounds. Both versions of the ProMaster use unibody construction, and front-wheel drive.
Thirteen different layouts are offered on the ProMaster, including two roof heights, three wheelbases and four body lengths. The work van can also be had as a chassis cab or a cutaway to outfits looking to upfit the van.
For optimal usage, the ProMaster is fitted with sliding side doors, hinged rear doors that open up 260 degreess and 17 tie down rings built into the floor of the cargo area. In total, the Promaster has a cargo volume of up to 530 cubic feet.
