P2B2A9 and quality sensor

I'll relate our 2015 diesel story from this summer. Code P2BA9 (Insufficient Reagent quality). We had just added a 2.5g jug of Peak from a busy Loves, though we don't think this is causal. Checked the code, continued driving, got the See Dealer 200 mile countdown. As others have noted, this is a for-real-limp-mode warning. 150 miles to the nearest dealer in CO, so we were stuck at that point.

The code can reset after >1gal is added, so the service approach is to drain and refill and trigger a regen. After 2 attempts at this the dealer still could not get the limp mode to disengage. On the second day with help from Chrysler's tech they confirmed it was a faulty sensor in the tank. Unfortunately this apparently cannot be replaced except by replacing the tank. 10 day wait (found this out Friday eve, shipping from Detroit) and $3000 part+labor (out of warranty). However, it fixed the problem. 10k miles since then, I now only refill from DEF nozzles at freeway truck stops - mostly because I don't have to worry about age or introducing contaminants - I think most people's advice of fresh DEF in a jug is reasonable of course, but this repair stung.

So was it the DEF, the DEF sensor or a combination? The tank is a spendy sucker. https://www.moparpartsgiant.com/part...2022431ad.html
I can’t find a source for the DEF quality sensor either so I guess it is part of the tank. Makes you wonder?

It was the DEF quality sensor giving bad readings, as you say it does not appear to be available without the rest of tank. Now, who knows what caused it to fail, but my comments about DEF are just color commentary around an expensive sensor replacement which manifested as an inability for the dealer to get the van out of limp mode.

For the RAM trucks there is an elaborate procedure that involves driving it at 55 mph for a half hour and much more. I don’t know if the software reset for our van’s is similar but if it is they may have screwed up the process which then requires a hardware replacement! I’d suspect that. At any rate you ate it. Thankfully most can do a fill with fresh DEF and it resets.

My DEF sent one of those death threats, I added 2 more gals of the cheap stuff and 100 miles down the road the light went out and have not had a problem with DEF since. I now have a $14 refractometer looks and feels like a Star Trek toy. But does it work, I haven't detected any bad DEF yet.

So what happens if you detect bad DEF? Walk back inside with an open container and tell them... what?
